What Is Space Tourism, and How It Will Become More Accessible With Future Technology

Updated: Jun 11, 2022

There are numerous reasons why someone would wish to travel to space. Some people want to feel weightless, while others want to see the Earth from a fresh perspective, and yet others want to be the first to visit another planet. Whatever the motivation, space travel is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

With the development of new technology, space tourism is becoming more and more accessible. Space travel used to be something that only wealthy people could afford, but with the rise of commercial space flight, that is no longer the case. There are now many companies offering space tourism experiences, and the price is likely to come down even further in the future. This is an exciting time for space tourism, and it is only going to become more popular in the years to come.

The history of space travel

In the beginning, space travel was something that only Astronauts and government officials could experience. However, in the last few decades, space travel has become more accessible to the general public. There are now many commercial companies offering space tourism experiences.

On April 28, 2001, Dennis Tito became the world’s first space tourist when he paid $20 million to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) for a week. Tito, an American businessman and former NASA employee, trained for six months before embarking on his eight-day journey.

Since then, seven other people have followed in Tito’s footsteps, including South African businessman Mark Shuttleworth, Iranian-American engineer Anousheh Ansari, and Canadian Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté.

Since the first commercial spaceflight occurred in 2001, the number of space travelers has continuously increased. There were seven space travelers in 2010, and by 2018, the number had risen to more than 60.

What is space travel?

Traveling to space has been a bucket list item for many people since the beginning of the space age. With the help of advances in technology, that dream is becoming a reality for many.

Space Adventures arranges trips to the ISS for those with a few million dollars to spare. The vast majority of space tourists have traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz rockets, but there are a few other options available as well. Virgin Galactic offers suborbital flights on their SpaceShip.

The journey to space, on the other hand, is a long one. It takes approximately seven and a half hours to reach space. The G-forces are practically scary once you reach space. One of the main reasons individuals decide to become space tourists is to experience the weightlessness of the ISS.

Once the trips to space are scheduled, personnel must go through training. Travelers should go through specialized training before venturing into space. With the ability to learn things about space and having extra rich funds, there may be no limit to the number of people who could one day journey to space.

The rise of commercial space flight and the future of space tourism

There are numerous reasons why space tourism is gaining popularity. To begin with, technology is becoming increasingly advanced, making it more accessible to the common people. Furthermore, the cost of space travel is gradually decreasing, making it more affordable for individuals to experience it. At present, a few companies provide space tourism experiences, and the number of alternatives will only increase in the future. Commercial space flight is a goal of companies like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic.

Robots in space

The future of space tourism appears to be bright. Future space technology will rely significantly on robotics and artificial intelligence to support astronauts. Robots may be able to do maintenance and repairs on current space stations while also assisting scientists with data collecting and analysis.

Lightweight Spacecraft

As space technology advances, interstellar vehicles will become lighter, safer, and more economical.

Homes on Mars and SpaceX from Elon Musk

Colonies on other planets are expected to play a major role in future space technologies. From 3D-printed homes on Mars to Martian settlements, these extraterrestrial places are the new futuristic frontier. Elon Musk's SpaceX recently launched the SpaceX Falcon 9. There are high hopes that Musk's space rockets will now make regular journeys to the International Space Station, and many see this as a positive sign for the future.

Hotels in outer space and other tourist attractions

Space hotels, space museums, and theme parks are also being formed as tourist attractions. In the future, these hotels will be even more affordable and accessible to the general public.

Conclusion

Modern space technology is a constantly evolving and extremely dynamic industry. New technologies will allow more people to travel into space. Flying into space will soon be as simple as buying a plane ticket. Astronauts may make space travel a more routine activity. With space stations and settlements on other planets in the solar system, visiting other planets could be as simple as hopping between them. Humans will soon be transported into orbit at a cheap price by companies like SpaceX. New sorts of space travel, such as mining and visiting other planets, will have a major impact on how we use and understand the Earth. These shifting viewpoints will result in a transformation in how we see our place in the cosmos.

Cheers!
